Guide to Internet Domain Names
What's in a domain name? Guide to choosing domain names.
Domain names are used for advertising your business, locations, ideas, themes,
hobbies and more! A domain name can also be a label used to identify your business,
business location, and products. There is only one Internet address, in the
entire world, maybe variations and different extensions, still there's only
one! No two parties may ever hold identical domain names. Your domain name
is how people will find you among the millions of other Web sites on the Internet.
Have fun, be creative, make your presence known Worldwide! Domain names
are officially looked as cyber real estate.
Having a web site for your
business is no longer an option, it's a commercial requirement. The first step
for any Internet Marketing campaign is buying the right domain name and then
advertising your site. Internet domain name should be easy to remember, easy
to relay to someone over the telephone, and easily remembered if heard on the
television and/or radio. Most people choose to register their business name
as a domain name, you should also consider selecting a generic domain name,
something related to your subject area, industry or interest. Some search engines
rank sites highly if your domain name contains keywords. Not only will it be
easier for people to remember, but it will also have greater resale value if
you choose to sell your web site in the future. Even well established brand
names, trademark holders etc. often buy generic domain names, often just to
forward to their web site. Generic terms cannot be trademarked to the point
of the exclusion of others using the word combinations. Be descriptive. Beware
that people have registered celebrity, trademarks or company names hoping to
make a quick buck by selling them back to their owners, it is an illegal practice
called "cybersquatting". Check whether the name you are registering encroaches
on any trademark.
Dot Com Domain Names;
.Com is universally recognized and remembered, most widely known and the most
popular extension. One big mistake in selecting domain names is to wait too
long - the .com version may already be taken. Often people register other extensions,
.net, .info, .us as an example, which can be great, however you really need
to get people to focus on the extension when advertising your site, or you can
lead people to the wrong address, your competitors.
Country Code Domain
Names;National pride is great, but remember that the Internet
has broken down international barriers. Think of your target audience. If it
is the people within your own country, or those looking only in your country,
a country specific domain is fine.
In summary, here are basic guidelines
for choosing a good domain name.
Short Domain Names; as short as possible is good, the single
word address is often perceived as to broad. When you enter a query into a search
engine, often you will see 2 or 3 words in the address listed higher. People
very rarely enter a single word, you will see the single word address often
on the first page, not often is it first. Check it out on google search, try:
money, games etc.
Generic Domain Names; as generic as possible, as descriptive
as possible, even though it may be long.
Numbers; numbers in a domain name may be used with great success. There
are many search engine queries for ex; Best 100 websites, Top 10 selling books,
100 recipes and so on.
Domain Name Misspellings and Variations; as you have probably experienced
when quickly typing a domain name or search engine query, you misspell, so do
others.
Variations: there are many folks from other countries who spell the same terms
or mean the same thing, ex; theater or theater, center or centre, harbor or
harbour, non of these are misspelled.
TLD: A top-level domain
TLD is the last part of which Internet domain names consist of.
